New border infrastructures in Africa are seen as signs of the future. However, alongside many economic and political advantages for African states, neo-colonial interests are hidden, and criticism from the local population is expressed.
One Stop Border: Africa’s new border posts
New border infrastructures are currently being built in many regions of Africa. One Stop Border Posts (OSBPs) are located along expanded trade corridors across the continent and are fundamentally changing the face of borders
Open” borders: Between national and neo-colonial interests
In the future, the new border posts are supposed to lead to many advantages for African states, for example more transnational trade, increased tax revenues, more national security, but also strengthened regional cooperation between neighbouring countries.
Who owns the border?
On the ground, the new One Stop Border Posts are often viewed critically. Across Kenya, border residents complain that the new border posts threaten their livelihoods.
